Our Story

How it all started...

New Zion Baptist Church traces its roots back to 1866, when the church was first founded as Colored Baptist Church Zion shortly after the end of slavery. It was established as a place where newly freed African Americans could gather to worship, build community, and grow in their faith.

Through generations of believers, the church has remained a spiritual cornerstone in San Marcos, continuing a legacy of faith, resilience, and commitment to God’s people.

Expanding the vision...

Throughout the years, New Zion has continued to grow and evolve while remaining grounded in its mission of reaching, restoring, and releasing God’s people back into the world.

Under the leadership of Pastor Colby Cotton, the church continues to expand its vision through worship, discipleship, outreach, and ministries that serve people of all ages. New Zion remains committed to creating a place where lives are transformed through the Word of God and the power of community.

Where we are headed...

As New Zion continues to grow, we are preparing for the future God has in store for our church. Our vision includes expanding our facilities and creating more space for ministry, outreach, and community impact.

We believe God is positioning New Zion for the next generation, and we are excited about the lives that will continue to be reached and transformed.
